There were 14 willing volunteers on a fairly dull morning. Armed with our pickers and our bags we collected rubbish from as far North as The Avenue and as far South as the Salutation. We covered the East and West parts of the old wagonway (or trod). We also blitzed the King George V football field and used the parish vehicle to bring the collected bags up to The Pavilion for sorting and combining. Blue bags for glass, red for general rubbish, clear for cans and white for paper and cardboard. A lot of the obvious litter was beyond our reach behind wire fences, but we all felt we had made a noticeable difference to the areas covered. The general rubbish was put into the parish dumper bin, the paper and glass were recycled at Pity Me recycling centre – the cans were given to the Rotary Club of Houghton who collect and recycle drinks cans – they have a donated skip – the cans are crushed and then sold for hundreds of pounds which is then donated to charity. If anyone has suggestions for another litter pick before the 22nd April please let me know and I’ll see if it would be possible to arrange something.
